Yulee Seo, Violin

Yulee Seo is a violinist and violin educator based in the San Francisco Bay Area. She regularly performs with the San Francisco Symphony as a substitute and appears as a guest concertmaster with the Santa Cruz Symphony. She has previously held positions with Symphony San Jose as associate concertmaster, as well as with the Marin Symphony, California Symphony, and Sacramento Philharmonic.

As an educator, Seo has served on the faculty of the Fresno Opera and Orchestra Summer Academy (FOOSAmusic.org) and has worked with several regional youth orchestras throughout the Bay Area. She also maintains a private teaching studio.

Born in South Korea, Seo has performed as a soloist and chamber/orchestral musician in Korea, Japan, China, Austria, Germany, Poland, Sweden, and the United States. She has appeared at major venues such as Musikverein Vienna, Carnegie Hall, Salzburg Festspielhaus, Davies Symphony Hall, Disney Hall, Liederhalle, Muza Kawasaki, and the Seoul Arts Center.

She is a prizewinner of several competitions, including the Padova International Music Competition and the Dichler Competition, and has appeared as a soloist with the Seoul Symphony, Hungarian Kammerorchester, SNU Modern Ensemble, SK Networks Chamber Orchestra, and Tri-Valley Youth Symphony. She was also invited to perform a solo recital at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, where J.S. Bach served as Kapellmeister, as part of the Leipzig Bach Festival.

Seo has received numerous scholarships and awards, including those from the Live Music Now Foundation founded by Yehudi Menuhin, the Rotary Club Wiener Neustadt, and the Angelika-Prokopp Akademie of the Vienna Philharmonic, which led to her invitation to perform at the Salzburg Festival.

Her orchestral experience includes engagements with the Stuttgart Philharmonic, International Attergau Institute Orchestra, Festival Ensemble Stuttgart, Seoul Philharmonic, KBS Symphony, Bucheon Philharmonic, TIMF Ensemble, and the SNU-Mannheim Tour Ensemble.

She holds degrees from Seoul National University and the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna in violin performance with a specialization in early music.

Seo’s musical interests span a wide range of historical periods. She studied baroque violin with Ingomar Rainer, Jocelyne Rainer, and Hiro Kurosaki, and has collaborated with contemporary composers including Dieter Schnebel, Jean-Bernard Matter, Jinho Kim, Jean Ahn, and others.
